Flashback Iconic- Alek Wek

Alek Wek has has an extraordinary career as a supermodel. She has appeared on numerous catwalks and covers, and has won many awards, but her life did not begin as glamorous as it is now. Alek was born in Sudan and her family was forced to flee to England to escape the war. Her father died and she lived with her mother and her eight siblings. While at a party she was discovered by a scout and later signed to Ford. Alek Wek is one of i-D magazine's favorite model, and has either opened or closed for every major designer's show. Her runway debut was with Alexander McQueen in 1997, and went on to be featured in both Janet Jackson and Tina Turner's videos. With all her accomplishments to date, Alek is known for her charity work. She has never forgotten the hardship that she endured as a child and she is currently involved in the Refugees Advisory Council. She is an icon, in front of and away from the camera, and a MosaMuse favorite. Above is a recent photo of her in Japanese Vogue, taken by Josh Olins.
